Scale Overview
The Alert Scale of Cognitive Style (ASCS) was developed by Loren D. Crane (1989). It is designed to measure Hemispheric Cognitive Style. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: A = Option A, B = Option B.
The scale includes 11 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 20. Interpretation guidelines:
- Strong left hemisphere orientation: 0 – 4
- Moderate left hemisphere orientation: 5 – 8
- Bilateral hemisphere balance: 9 – 11
- Moderate right hemisphere orientation: 12 – 15
- Strong right hemisphere orientation: 16 – 20
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
