Scale Overview
The Alert Scale of Cognitive Style (ASCS) was developed by Loren D. Crane (1989). It is designed to measure Cognitive Style / Hemisphericity. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: A = Option A, B = Option B.
The scale includes 11 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 20. Interpretation guidelines:
- Strong left hemisphere orientation: 0 – 4
- Moderate left hemisphere orientation: 5 – 8
- Bilateral hemisphere balance: 9 – 11
- Moderate right hemisphere orientation: 12 – 15
- Strong right hemisphere orientation: 16 – 20
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
