Scale Overview
The McCroskey Homophily Scales (Old Version) was developed by James C. McCroskey, Virginia P. Richmond, & John A. Daly (1974). It is designed to measure Perceived Homophily. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 8 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Attitude Homophily, Background Homophily.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Very strong feeling (Left anchor), 2 = Strong feeling, 3 = Fairly weak feeling, 4 = Unsure or undecided, 5 = Fairly weak feeling, 6 = Strong feeling, 7 = Very strong feeling (Right anchor).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 4 to 28. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Homophily: 4 – 11
- Moderate Homophily: 12 – 20
- High Homophily: 21 – 28
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
