Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Obsessive Relational Intrusion Scale – ORI was developed by William R. Cupach, Brian H. Spitzberg (2004). It is designed to measure Obsessive Relational Intrusion and Stalking Victimization. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 63 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Pursuit, Violation, Threat, Hyperintimacy.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Pursuit | 11,13,17,24,31,35,54,57 | 8 |
| Violation | 26,29,47,63 | 4 |
| Threat | 1,5,6,7,30,36,39,59,62 | 9 |
| Hyperintimacy | 3,14,19,23,33,42,44,48,49,50,51,53,60 | 13 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Never, 1 = Once since the age of 18, 2 = Rarely (2 to 4 times since the age of 18), 3 = Sometimes (5 to 9 times since the age of 18), 4 = Frequently (more than 10 times since the age of 18).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 252. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low level of relational intrusion victimization: 0 – 63
- Moderate level of relational intrusion victimization: 64 – 126
- High level of relational intrusion victimization: 127 – 252
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified in source text.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
