Scale Overview
The Interpersonal Communication Inventory – Superior/Subordinate Version (ICI-S) was developed by Jennifer Lyn Graham (adapted from Millard J. Bienvenu) (1998). It is designed to measure Interpersonal Communication. The scale is intended for use with Employees and managers.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 40 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: Yes = YES (usually), No = NO (seldom), Sometimes = Sometimes.
The scale includes 20 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 120. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Communication Effectiveness: 0 – 40
- Moderate Communication Effectiveness: 41 – 80
- High Communication Effectiveness: 81 – 120

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
