Scale Overview
The Cancer Behavior Inventory–Brief Version (CBI-B) was developed by Heitzmann, C. A., Merluzzi, T. V., Jean-Pierre, P., Roscoe, J. A., Kirsh, K. L., & Passik, S. D. (2011). It is designed to measure Coping Self-Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Adult cancer patients.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all confident, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = Moderately confident, 6 = 6, 7 = 7, 8 = 8, 9 = Totally confident.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 14 to 126. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Coping Self-Efficacy: 14 – 50
- Moderate Coping Self-Efficacy: 51 – 90
- High Coping Self-Efficacy: 91 – 126
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.84.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 4 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
