Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 33 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Need for Special Training, Seriousness of NIDDM, Value of Tight Control, Psychosocial Impact of DM, Patient Autonomy.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Need for Special Training | 1,6,10,17,20 | 5 |
| Seriousness of NIDDM | 2,7,11,15,21,25,31 | 7 |
| Value of Tight Control | 3,8,12,16,23,26,28 | 7 |
| Psychosocial Impact of DM | 4,13,18,22,29,33 | 6 |
| Patient Autonomy | 5,9,14,19,24,27,30,32 | 8 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Somewhat Disagree, 3 = Neutral, 4 = Somewhat Agree, 5 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 10 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Agreement / Disagree: 1 – 2
- Neutral: 2 – 3
- High Agreement / Agree: 3 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from 0.67 to 0.80 for the subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
