Scale Overview
The Functional Living Index – Cancer (FLIC) was developed by Harvey Schipper, J. Clinch, A. McMurray, M. Levitt (1984). It is designed to measure Quality of Life in Cancer Patients. The scale is intended for use with Cancer patients.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 22 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Physical Well-Being, Psychological Well-Being, Social Well-Being, Family Situation, Somatic Well-Being.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = 1, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = 7.
The scale includes 10 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 22 to 154. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Quality of Life: 22 – 65
- Moderate Quality of Life: 66 – 110
- High Quality of Life: 111 – 154
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.84.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
