Scale Overview
The Stages of Recovery Instrument – STORI was developed by R. Andresen, P. Caputi, & L. G. Oades (2006). It is designed to measure Psychological recovery from serious mental illness. The scale is intended for use with Adults experiencing serious mental illness.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 50 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Moratorium, Awareness, Preparation, Rebuilding, Growth.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not at all true now, 1 = 1, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = Completely true now.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 50. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Stage Endorsement: 0 – 15
- Moderate Stage Endorsement: 16 – 35
- High Stage Endorsement: 36 – 50
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
