The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support – MSPSS was developed by Gregory D. Zimet, Nancy W. Dahlem, Sara G. Zimet, & Gordon K. Farley (1988). It is designed to measure Perceived Social Support. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.

This instrument consists of 12 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Significant Other, Family, Friends.

Response Format

Total scores range from 12 to 84. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low perceived support: 12 – 35
- Moderate perceived support: 36 – 60
- High perceived support: 61 – 84
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.85 – 0.91.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
