Scale Overview
The Sense of Belonging Scale – SOBS was developed by Dawn Anderson-Butcher & David E. Conroy (2002). It is designed to measure Sense of belonging. The scale is intended for use with Youth and adolescents in youth development programs.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = NO!, 2 = no, 3 = yes, 4 = YES!.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 5 to 20. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low sense of belonging: 5 – 10
- Moderate sense of belonging: 11 – 15
- High sense of belonging: 16 – 20
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
