Scale Overview
The Sense of Belonging Scale – SOBS was developed by Dawn Anderson-Butcher & David E. Conroy (2002). It is designed to measure Sense of belonging. The scale is intended for use with Youth and adolescents in community/youth programs.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = NO!, 2 = no, 3 = yes, 4 = YES!.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 5 to 20. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Sense of Belonging: 5 – 10
- Moderate Sense of Belonging: 11 – 15
- High Sense of Belonging: 16 – 20
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
