Scale Overview
The Social Consciousness Scale was developed by Robert L. Flewelling, Mallie J. Paschall, Christopher L. Ringwalt (1993). It is designed to measure Social Consciousness. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents (originally validated on males aged 12-16).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly agree, 2 = Agree, 3 = Disagree, 4 = Strongly disagree.
The scale includes 2 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Social Consciousness: 1 – 2
- High Social Consciousness: 2 – 4
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
