Scale Overview
The Asian Values Scale – AVS was developed by Bryan S. K. Kim, Donald R. Atkinson, and Peggy Yang (1999). It is designed to measure Adherence to Asian cultural values. The scale is intended for use with Adults and college students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 36 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 18 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low adherence to Asian cultural values: 1 – 3
- Moderate adherence to Asian cultural values: 3 – 5
- High adherence to Asian cultural values: 5 – 7
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.81 – 0.82.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
