Scale Overview
The Everyday Discrimination Scale – EDS was developed by David R. Williams, Yu Yu, James S. Jackson, Norman B. Anderson (1997). It is designed to measure Perceived everyday discrimination. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 9 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 6 = Almost every day, 5 = At least once a week, 4 = A few times a month, 3 = A few times a year, 2 = Less than once a year, 1 = Never.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 9 to 54. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low frequency of discrimination: 9 – 22
- Moderate frequency of discrimination: 23 – 36
- High frequency of discrimination: 37 – 54
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.84 – 0.88.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
