Scale Overview
The Cultural Life Styles Inventory – CLSI (Version 2.0) was developed by Ramona H. Mendoza (1989). It is designed to measure Acculturation. The scale is intended for use with Mexican-American adolescents and adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 29 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Intra-familial Language Use, Extra-familial Language Use, Social Affiliation and Activities, Cultural Familiarity and Activities, Cultural Identification and Pride.

Response anchors: a = Only Spanish / Mexican / Latino, b = Mostly Spanish / Mexican / Latino, c = Mostly English / Anglo American, d = Only English / Anglo American, e = Both English/Spanish or Mexican/Anglo American about equally, f = Other language / ethnic group / heritage, g = Not applicable / I do not have / I do not celebrate.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 0. Interpretation guidelines:
- Scoring is typological: 'a' or 'b' responses indicate Cultural Resistance (CR); 'c' or 'd' responses indicate Cultural Shift (CS); 'e' responses indicate Cultural Incorporation (CI).: 0 – 0
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha: Intra-familial language use (.87), Extra-familial language use (.91), Social affiliation and activities (.89), Cultural familiarity and activities (.84), Cultural identification and pride (.89).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
