Scale Overview
The Ethnocentric Image of Democracy Scale was developed by Herbert H. Hyman, Charles R. Wright, and Terence K. Hopkins (1962). It is designed to measure Ethnocentrism in democratic perceptions. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 9 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: thoroughly_democratic = Thoroughly democratic, undemocratic_tolerable = Undemocratic but tolerable, thoroughly_undemocratic = Thoroughly undemocratic.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 9. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Ethnocentrism: 0 – 3
- Moderate Ethnocentrism: 4 – 6
- High Ethnocentrism: 7 – 9
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
