Scale Overview
The Social, Attitudinal, Familial, and Environmental Acculturative Stress Scale for Children – SAFE-C was developed by Hovey & King (1996). It is designed to measure Acculturative Stress. The scale is intended for use with Immigrant and second-generation children and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 16 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Agree, 2 = Agree, 3 = Disagree, 4 = Strongly Disagree.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 16 to 64. Interpretation guidelines:
- High Acculturative Stress: 16 – 32
- Moderate Acculturative Stress: 33 – 48
- Low Acculturative Stress: 49 – 64

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
