Scale Overview
The Embarrassability Scale – ES was developed by Andre Modigliani (1968). It is designed to measure Embarrassability. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 26 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Personal Embarrassability, Vicarious Embarrassability.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = I would not feel the least embarrassed: not awkward or uncomfortable at all., 2 = I would feel slightly embarrassed., 3 = I would feel fairly embarrassed: somewhat self-conscious, and rather awkward and uncomfortable., 4 = I would feel quite embarrassed., 5 = I would feel strongly embarrassed: extremely self-conscious, awkward and uncomfortable..
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 26 to 130. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Embarrassability: 26 – 60
- Moderate Embarrassability: 61 – 95
- High Embarrassability: 96 – 130
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
