Scale Overview
The Ten Item Personality Inventory – TIPI was developed by Samuel D. Gosling, Peter J. Rentfrow, & William B. Swann, Jr. (2003). It is designed to measure Big Five Personality Traits. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, Openness to Experiences.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 2 to 14. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low score on subscale: 2 – 5
- Moderate score on subscale: 6 – 10
- High score on subscale: 11 – 14

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Extraversion: .68, Agreeableness: .40, Conscientiousness: .50, Emotional Stability: .73, Openness: .45.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 1 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
