Scale Overview
The Asthma Control Test (ACT) was developed by Bayliss MS, Fortin EW, Kosinski M, et al. (2004). It is designed to measure Asthma Control. The scale is intended for use with Asthma patients aged 12 years and older.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = All of the time / More than once a day / 4 or more times a day / Not controlled at all, 2 = Most of the time / Once a day / 1 to 3 times a day / Poorly controlled, 3 = Some of the time / 3 to 6 times a week / Once or twice a week / Somewhat controlled, 4 = A little of the time / Once or twice a week / Once a week or less / Well controlled, 5 = None of the time / Not at all / Not at all / Completely controlled.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 5 to 25. Interpretation guidelines:
- Very poorly controlled asthma: 5 – 15
- Not well controlled asthma: 16 – 19
- Well controlled asthma: 20 – 24
- Completely controlled asthma: 25 – 25
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.84.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
