Scale Overview
The COPD Assessment Test (CAT) was developed by Jones et al. (2009). It is designed to measure COPD Health Status Impact. The scale is intended for use with Adults and elderly individuals with COPD.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 8 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = 0 (Minimum impact), 1 = 1, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5 (Maximum impact).
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 40. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low impact: 0 – 10
- Medium impact: 11 – 20
- High impact: 21 – 30
- Very high impact: 31 – 40
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of 0.88.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
