Scale Overview
The Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale (DMSES) was developed by van der Bijl, J. J., van Poelgeest-Eeltink, A. V., & Shortridge-Baggett, L. (1999). It is designed to measure Diabetes self-efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Adults with Type 2 Diabetes.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Nutrition, Medication, Physical Activity, Foot and Blood Glucose Care, Managing Hypo/Hyperglycemia.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 20 to 100. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Self-Efficacy: 20 – 49
- Moderate Self-Efficacy: 50 – 79
- High Self-Efficacy: 80 – 100
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from 0.79 to 0.92 for subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
