Scale Overview
The Falls Efficacy Scale International – FES-I was developed by Tinetti ME, Richmann D, Powell L (Original FES); Kempen GIJM et al. (FES-I) (2007). It is designed to measure Fear of falling / Falls efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Older adults and clinical populations.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 16 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all concerned, 2 = Somewhat concerned, 3 = Fairly concerned, 4 = Very concerned.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 16 to 64. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low concern about falling: 16 – 19
- Moderate concern about falling: 20 – 27
- High concern about falling: 28 – 64
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha > 0.90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
