Scale Overview
The Fecal Incontinence Quality of Life Scale (FIQL) was developed by Rockwood TH, et al. (2000). It is designed to measure Quality of life in patients with fecal incontinence. The scale is intended for use with Adults with fecal incontinence.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 29 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Lifestyle, Coping/Behavior, Depression/Self-Perception, Embarrassment.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Most of the time / Strongly agree / Poor, 2 = Some of the time / Agree / Fair, 3 = A little of the time / Disagree / Good, 4 = None of the time / Strongly disagree / Very good or Excellent.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Quality of Life (Severe Impact): 1 – 2
- Moderate Quality of Life (Moderate Impact): 2 – 3
- High Quality of Life (Minimal Impact): 3 – 4

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from 0.80 to 0.96 across subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
