Scale Overview
The International Prostate Symptom Score – IPSS was developed by Barry MJ, et al. (1992). It is designed to measure Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS). The scale is intended for use with Adults experiencing micturition difficulties.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 8 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Voiding symptoms, Storage symptoms, Quality of Life.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not at all / None, 1 = Less than 1 time in 5 / 1 time, 2 = Less than half the time / 2 times, 3 = About half the time / 3 times, 4 = More than half the time / 4 times, 5 = Almost always / 5 or more times.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 35. Interpretation guidelines:
- Mild symptoms: 0 – 7
- Moderate symptoms: 8 – 19
- Severe symptoms: 20 – 35
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from 0.78 to 0.86.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
