Scale Overview
The Patient Competency Rating Scale – PCRS was developed by Prigatano G.P. (1986). It is designed to measure Self-awareness of deficit. The scale is intended for use with Adults with traumatic brain injury or stroke.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Activities of Daily Living, Cognitive Functioning, Interpersonal Functioning, Emotional Functioning.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Can't do, 2 = Very difficult to do, 3 = Can do with some difficulty, 4 = Fairly easy to do, 5 = Can do with ease.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 30 to 150. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low perceived competency: 30 – 90
- Moderate perceived competency: 91 – 120
- High perceived competency: 121 – 150
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha > 0.90).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
