Scale Overview
The Stoma Quality-of-Life Instrument – Stoma-QOL was developed by Prieto L, Thorsen H, Juul K (2005). It is designed to measure Stoma-specific Quality of Life. The scale is intended for use with Individuals with a stoma (colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Sleep, Intimate Relationships, Relations with Family and Close Friends, Relations with Others, General Concerns.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Always, 2 = Sometimes, 3 = Rarely, 4 = Never.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 20 to 80. Interpretation guidelines:
- Poor Quality of Life: 20 – 35
- Moderate Quality of Life: 36 – 50
- Good Quality of Life: 51 – 65
- Excellent Quality of Life: 66 – 80
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha > 0.85.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
