noun. With regard to some Native American societies, an individual, commonly a man, who assumes the gender identity of the opposite gender with the approval of the society. The society frequently sees such individuals as having an extraordinary spiritual or guidance part to play within the community. In the Navajo society, such an individual is called a nadle. In the akota society, the term winkte is utilized, and in other societies a literal translation of
