TRANSPORTER

noun. a protein complex which spans a cell membrane and transmits neurotransmitters, ions, or other compounds between the outside and inside of the cell. Transporters might utilize passive transport, wherein a compound is carried into or out of a cell in alignment with its concentration gradient across the cell membrane; or active transport, that being an energy-reliant procedure frequently depending upon the hydrolysis of ATP to supply energy to encourage motion of a compound from one half of the cell membrane to the other half.

TRANSPORTER: “The transporter has become completely inactive.”
