Timbre

Timbre (pronounced “tam’-ber”) is the type of sound something makes in comparison to anything else producing the same pitch at the same loudness. Nails on a chalkboard and a violin may play the same pitch at the same loudness, but typically the violin is much preferred. The material composition of the item or instrument making a sound is central to its timbre, as is richness or brightness of the item or instrument.
