Tactile Hallucination

A tactile hallucination is the false sensation of tactile sensory input which are the body sensations that indicate contact with a solid object. It is the result of the mind’s faulty integration of tactile neural signals that are generated in the central nervous system and sent to the primary and secondary somatosensory cortices.

Tactile hallucinations are symptomatic of many neurological conditions such as a schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, Ekbom’s syndrome, and delirium tremens from alcohol withdrawal. Tactile hallucinations can also result from drug use such as cocaine and alcohol. Additionally, amputees who experience the phantom limb phenomenon are experiencing a type of tactile hallucination.
