Sphericity is a statistical assumption about a repeated-measures ANOVA (hyperlink ). Sphericity occurs when there is complete equality of the variances of the differences between all variations of related groups. When the variances of the differences between groups are unequal then there is a sphericity violation which increases the risk of a Type 1 error which is a false positive.
