Spasticity

Spasticity is characterized by the continuous contraction of muscles which leads to stiffness. Those with this condition have difficulties in moving and talking.

The symptoms include painful muscle contractions, joint and muscle deformities, involuntary leg crossing, muscle fatigue, muscle growth and protein synthesis inhibition, and less precise movements. This is usually caused by a damage to a part of the central nervous system which is involved in voluntary movement. The damage is then manifested as increased muscle activity. Around 80% of individuals with cerebral palsy present with spasticity. This is also associated with traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, meningitis, encephalitis, and other pertinent conditions. The treatments include physical and occupational therapy, Botox injections, medications, and surgery.
