Same sex marriage refers to a lasting commitment (either formal or informal) between homosexual partners. In the past, these relationships were illegal throughout the western world. However, this has changed and legal marriages, (with all of the legal, financial, child care, etc. rights and privileges that are part and parcel of marriage) are now sanctioned in many places.
