SALIVARY GLAND

Glands present in the mouth which have ducts and produce saliva; also secrete amylase, an enzyme which breaks down into starch and maltose. Major grouping of salivary glands occurs in pairings like the parotic, submaxillary, and sublingual paired glands. Small salivary glands occur throughout the mouth, including on the cheeks and tongue. See also: salivation.
