RECOMBINATION

The trading of hereditary components between paired chromosomes during the course of the development of sex cells (sperm or ova). Related to the splitting and assembly of chromatids between homologous chromosomes, in a procedure referred to as crossing over; leads to offspring acquiring arrangements of genes which are unlike those of either the mother or the father.
