RECOGNITORY ASSIMILATION

A form of sensorimotor intelligence identified by the discerning application of a scheme. For instance, a baby utilizes a sucking scheme to a nipple for breastfeeding, as well as to a variety of non-nutritive items (e.g., a toy, blanket, or thumb) for solace, to assist sleeping, or perhaps for a completely different reason.

RECOGNITORY ASSIMILATION: “The infant became aware that sucking its thumb was comforting and learned to apply this comfort scheme in an example of recognitory assimilation.”
