PUNISHMENT

A factor in operant conditioning. Basically, the process that makes a certain response to a stimulus less probable. As an example, if a subject is at first rewarded for a certain action, they are likely to repeat the action to receive reward. However, if electrical shock is the result of the action, the likelihood that the subject will continue the desired action for reward will diminish.

PUNISHMENT: “Through punishment conditioning we were able to lessen the instances of graffiti at the school when, instead of praise from the students, the “taggers” were called disruptive and disrespectful by the others.”
