Neurotic anxiety, in psychoanalytic theory, is caused by the unconscious fear that the Id, the instinctual part of the mind, will take over. During this state, the individual is experiencing apprehension due to the perceived threat of loss of control over the more impulsive, aggressive, and selfish province of the mind. Hence, anxious feelings arise due to the imminent punishment.
