Neuroleptic

Neuroleptic refers to the first-generation antipsychotic drugs that were first marketed in the 1950’s. Antipsychotic drugs are typically used for the treatment for psychosis which include delusions, hallucinations, and disordered thought (all symptoms of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder). These first-generation drugs, referred to as “typical antipsychotics”, possessed unpleasant side-effects such as weight loss and movement disorders that newer antipsychotic drugs don’t. The name neuroleptic is not used for modern antipsychotic drugs.
