Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI)

The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) assesses individuals’ levels of occupational burnout. It is recognized as the leading assessment tool for burnout. This inventory has 22 items which measures three dimensions: depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, and personal accomplishment. The depersonalization dimension looks into impersonal, cynical, and apathetic responses. The emotional exhaustion dimension has items which pertain to being emotionally extended. The personal accomplishment dimension focuses on achievements, feelings of competence, and efficacy. This introspective inventory may be administered to individuals or groups and may be completed in 10 to 15 minutes. The original MBI was published in 1981 and was constructed by Christina Maslach and Susan Jackson.
