Major Neurocognitive Disorder (Dementia)

Major neurocognitive disorder, more commonly referred to as dementia, refers to a a general decline in memory, speech, reasoning, intellectual function, and/or spatial-temporal awareness. It is caused by a breakdown of the nervous system that is associated with aging. If affects about 1-2% of adults by age 65 and about 30% of adults by age 80. Unfortunately, this disorder is frequently misdiagnosed when the actual problems are depression and over-medication which are also prevalent in the aged. Although it is not always possible to ward off, dementia can be slowed by good nutrition, exercise and mental stimulation.
