Individuality, also called selfhood, is the state being an individual. To be an individual means that a person is aware of their status as a person separate from others with their own needs and goals. The status of an individual is achieved as a child grows to adulthood and gains independence and insight. This definition is especially important in the fields of biology, law, and philosophy.
