Idiot is a derogatory term for someone who is foolish. It was a former psychiatric category of intellectual disability characterized by having a mental age of 2 years old or less. This category was then replaced with “profound mental retardation” which later evolved into “profound intellectual disability”. “Idiot” is based on the Greek word “idiotes” which means “unskilled”, and “ignorant”.
