Identified Patient (IP)

The identified patient (IP) in family therapy is the member with the behavior which caused the family to seek treatment. This term is employed by therapists to prevent the other family members from using the IP as a scapegoat regarding issues that need to be resolved. Most often, the IPs are children or adolescents in dysfunctional families.
