An iconoclast challenges venerated institutions or valued beliefs. Iconoclasts support the abolishment of icons, monuments, or images, usually because of politics or religion. In history, this term refers to the supporters of the 8th-9th century Byzantine Church movement to destroy religious icons. It is also associated with the Puritans of the 16th to 17th century and their beliefs in “plainness” and their destruction of Catholic-related objects (statues, stained-glass windows, artifacts, etc.). For instance, a destruction of religious images was nationally carried out in the reformed Zurich in 1524.
