Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS)

Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) is used in assessing the severity of brain damage with the following categories: low disability, moderate disability, severe disability, persistent vegetative state, and death.

* Low disability pertains to unsubstantial damage and minor psychological and neurological deficits.
* Moderate disability refers to mild damage which still makes independent living possible; special equipment may be needed at work.
* Severe disability requires permanent help.
* Persistent vegetative state refers to severe damage which led to a long duration of unresponsive state.
* Death is the category for the inability to regain consciousness. GOS was developed by Bryan Jennett and Michael Bond in 1975.
