Geriatric Psychology

Geriatric psychology studies the mental and physical health of the elderly.

This subfield of psychology specializes in helping people cope with aging and depletion of abilities like coordination and memory. Also, it looks into related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and Parkinson’s disease. The development of geriatric psychology is attributed to the increase of interest regarding the impact of aging on mental health. It began in 1978 with a small group which created the American Association of Geriatric Psychology (AAGP).
