Gene Mapping

Gene mapping is the method in specifying the location of certain genes and their distances from each other. This is usually done by first collecting tissue and blood samples from family members which contain a specific trait or disease and then the information would then be compared with the samples from family members which do not have the said trait or disease. Scientists look for unique molecular patterns which are called markers. Through this map, the relationships of the genes may also be drawn. Gene mapping provides a biological proof of the transmission of diseases and gives details on which chromosome contains specific genes.
